The film looks at Anarcho-Syndicalism in Germany, in particular during its heyday in the 1920s, using the town Sommerda in Thuringia as an example- this small industrial town had 7.000 inhabitants, 2.000 of whom were members of the Anarcho-Syndicalist union FAUD. They left their previous organization USPD so as to join FAUD after listening to lectures by Rudolf Rocker, the most important theoretician of the “Freier Arbeiter Union Deutschlands”.
The history of the FAUD in Sommerda and in Germany as a whole is told using a wide range of old photos and literature and also through interviews with historian Andreas Graf and the eyewitness Karl Wandt, now aged 84, who was an FAUD member in Sommerda. The history of anarcho-syndicalist ideas is traced up to the present day.
